Writing Wednesday | Prompt 44

I'm BAAAACK! Hi everyone. I've missed each of you so much. But it's time to get back in the saddle. I'm so happy to be back in the real world and writing with you all. I have some awesome teasers coming your way from The Broken Curse and some great news in the near future. But today, we're prompting. So let's get to it!

Prompt Forty-Four- Fairy Tale Re-imagined
Pick a fairy tale of your choice and change the ending. Make it so there is no happy ever after. Or make it funny. Or make it super serious. I'm choosing to do Cinderella, but you can pick whatever you like! Enjoy! Remember, it's just the ending.

My response...

A loud knock sounded from the door. I knew it was Prince's royal crew coming to test the slipper. My heart rate skyrocketed as I waited to be fit. I knew, of course, that it was my shoe. And I knew that what would happen next was going to change my life.

My step-sisters sauntered into the room with two guards marching behind them. I smiled pleasantly as I awaited my fitting. Butch, the older twin, went first. She sat on our stepmothers old plush chair and held her disgusting foot up for the guard. He wrinkled his nose in disgust but leaned forward and grabbed it. She giggled with glee, but as he tried to shove her foot into the shoe, her giggles turned to groans.

"No fit," the guard announced. He dropped her foot as fast as he could. Butch got off the chair, her frown cutting so deep into her face. Betch decided to be fitted next, while I looked from the stairwell. She sat down and tore her heel off. I could smell the rancid foot from where I crouched. They were truly disgusting.

The man looked down at her, sniffed in and then took a step back. The second guard frowned, but took his place with the glass slipper. The man shoved that shoe on her foot so fast, it was incredible to watch. The shoe was much too large for her and instantly clattered to the ground.

"Is that all the woman, miss?" the guard asked Betch.

"My mother should be around here somewhere," Betch said with her whiny, nasally voice. I started to stand, seeing enough of the charade, but my foot caught on the stair and made a noisy clatter.

"You there?" a guard said, halting me in my spot. I decided I should seal my fate. I started to walk down the stairs and when I got to the bottom, my step-mother was there, glaring at me. She whispered, If it fits, your life will soon end. My heart skipped and immediately I feared for my life. Surely the Prince would save me.

I took Betch's place on the sofa and pulled my ratty moccosin off my foot. Unlike Butch and Betch, my feet were fairly clean and had no odor to them whatsoever. I could see the guards were thankful. I help up my foot and waiting for him to slide the perfect fitting slipper onto me.

But as he tried, I realized that the shoe didn't fit. How on earth is this possible? It was my shoe that was left, how can it not fit anymore. "It must fit," I mumbled as the man tried to shove it onto my foot. It must have been at least two or three sizes too small now. Could I have grown that fast? Impossible.

"No fit," the guard said and took the shoe away. I stared at it in astonishment. "We must try you, m'am."

My step-mother shoved me off the sofa so hard that I fell onto the hard, wood floor. My back ached but it didn't hurt more than my heart. I knew the shoe was mine, yet it didn't fit. Nothing made sense. My step-mother's scream drew my attention.

The shoe fit! It fit her.

"I'm going to be Queen," she said as she stood up, the glass slipper still on. I looked at her foot and it was clear that it was a perfect fit. How could this be? Butch and Betch exclaimed with glee about living in the castle and all the riches they would acquire.

"Cinderella will be our servant," Betch said, pointing her hairy finger in my face.

"Cinderella will always wait on us," Butch chimed in.

"Yes, girls. Only now she can live in a cellar," my step-mother sneered. Today is nothing like I expected. I thought I would finally get out of here. I thought I would finally be free. But it turned out, nothing ever works out for me. I'm destined to be a maid for the rest of my life. A heavy tear trailed down my face, leaving a path of disappointment.
