Writing Wednesday | Prompt 9

Hey all! I've had a super busy week but I would never miss our weekly writing prompt/discussion. Today, I have a prompt for you all. I've been drowning in an unending sea of edits so I feel like writing today! This one I got from writers digest where I've been getting most of my prompts recently. Their site is actually really awesome so I urge you all to check it out...

Ps. Which is your favorite picture below?

PROMPT 9- Why did you do it?

At work, you've been getting a post it note on your desk every morning that says, "Why did you do it?" You've talked to your boss, the night cleaning crew and your co-workers. No one seems to know who is putting the note there, or why. You decide to work through the night on evening, in hopes of catching the person. Write out the scene.

(500 words or less- but if you're feeling ambitious, never stop!)

My response....

Luckily the day she chose to stay late, she had a lot of work to do so she wasn’t just sitting in her swiveling chair, watching the clock tick for her secret stranger. She was consumed in her work when she heard a creak coming from the hallway.

Immediately she dropped her pen on her desk and stood up, wanting to meet her hater head on. She picked up her gun that she kept in her purse and held it strong in her hands, hoping it will deter her enemy from hurting her.
“Who is it?” She asked out into the mostly dark office building. Silence greeted her back and her heart sank when she realized she was probably just hearing things. It was after midnight after all. She let her hands fall to her sides with the gun loosely hanging and retreated back to the room.

But before she could get a foot into the room, she was tackled to the ground. She grunted and tried to push the body off of her but it was clear that the man on top of her had the upper hand. Giving up, she let her body relax and waiting to see the man’s face who’s been haunting her with his notes for weeks.

She didn’t expect to see the man on top of her—Kevin, her ex-husband. She glared at him as she tried to put the pieces together in her mind. It didn’t make sense. They had ended their divorce cordially and had even begun to talk lately.

“You?” She gasped out, still pinned beneath the man’s hard body.

“Who else were you expecting?” He asked her back, his jade eyes soft and not like a stalker like she had expected.

“You sent me those notes?” She asked him.

“Of course. I need to know Jane. Why?” He cried out, burrowing his head in his hands like he was on the edge of a breakdown.

“Why didn’t you just ask me?” Exasperatedly, she pushed his now non-threatening body off of her and stood up so she could have the upper hand. It still didn’t make sense. If Kevin wanted to know why, why didn’t he just ask.

“You did this…” He said, standing up with her gun in his hands. She now realized that the situation was far more serious than him just annoying her or asking her a simple question. She now had to talk him off his little ledge.
Kevin always had some problems with his self esteem and fitting in. She never thought he would take it to this extreme but it was clear now that he needed help. And although she no longer loved Kevin, she would help him because after all, he was the father of her three children.

“Shh.” She said, trying to contain him. She reached her now shaking hands out and tried to get his hands in hers but he pulls back, jerking himself away. “Kevin, it’s okay. Let’s just go home.” Jane said to him in her most soothing voice.

“It’s not my home anymore.” He stuttered out, continuing to back up away from Jane.

“Just come home, Kevin. We can talk.” She said to him, hoping to bring him to her as she pursued his every move. Every step he took back, she took one forward. When she was close enough that she felt she could reach him, she doubled her step and knocked the gun out of his hand.

It went flying to the other side of the room. He started to reach for it but she got in his way so it was only her that he could see. He looked into her dark eyes, filled with so many emotions he could barely comprehend each one.
In that moment he knew that all he wanted was his life back—his family, his wife, his house. He prayed that Jane would give him a second chance. But that little voice in the back of his head told him otherwise. He collapsed on the ground and started bawling, trying to understand where he went wrong.

Jane, his Jane, sat next to him and held him for who knows how long.

Seven hundred words but not too bad. I have trouble staying in the 500 word count area. That's way too little!

  1. Great prompt, and fantastic piece of writing to go with it. Really believable dialogue.
